The Black Hair is the first of four episodes in the film KWAIDAN, which will kick off Japan Society's next film series, ZEN & ITS OPPOSITE: ESSENTIAL (& Turbulent) Japanese Art House.

The Black Hair is the story of a destitute but ambitious samurai (Rentaro Mikuni) who leaves his faithful, loving wife for a position far away, one that promises advancement. Unfortunately part of the deal necessitates his marrying a selfish, most unpleasant second wife. Things finally become too much for him and he leaves her and his position.

The "Bad" Second Wife (Misako Watanabe)

When he returns home, he finds his dutiful wife apparently unchanged. But, as one can well imagine, things are not truly as they seem.
