Japan Society NY continues its Monthly Classics screenings this October with Paradise View, an important and rarely-screened film from Okinawa by director Go Takamine.

Synopsis: A small community prepares for a wedding between a local girl and a Japanese teacher. On the periphery of these events is Reishu (Kaoru Kobayashi), who quits his job on a U.S. military base and uses the extra time to catch snakes and play with ants – and get the bride-to-be pregnant.

This uniquely Okinawan classic features Japanese music icons Jun Togawa (Guernica) and Haruomi Hosono (Yellow Magic Orchestra), who also provides the evocative score.

Paradise View is part of the Okinawan Vibes series, which offers the opportunity to experience the art and culture of Okinawa through a variety of programs. This screening is in commemoration of the 30th anniversary of the film's release and will be followed by a reception with special Okinawan food and beverages!
